A pulled muscle or muscle strain is a very common injury, you don’t have to be out on the football pitch or running down the road to pull something! That being said pulled muscles do mainly come from activity (around 10-55%) and can stop you in your sporting tracks.

So what can be done about them? Osteopathy is a great way to treat muscle strains. Firstly we relax off the muscle and start to speed up the recovery process. We then design a tailor made rehab programme to get you back to 100%. If you want to continue the plan, beyond the initial recovery, we can then give you exercises to strengthen the muscles preventing these types of injury in the future!

What are Pulled muscles/muscle strains?

Muscle Strains occur when the muscle has been over stretched. This can then lead to small micro-tears in the muscle. Muscle Strains are therefore categorised into 3 grades depending on the severity of the tears: 

  • Grade I (Mild): The muscle is overstretched
  • Grade II (Moderate): Involves stretching and some tearing of the muscle
  • Grade III (Severe): Complete tearing of the muscle

Some common causes of Pulled Muscles

As said previously most muscle strains come about from sport. However there are other causes especially with manual jobs. Here are a few listed below

  • Improper lifting techniques
  • Lifting something too heavy
  • Too much physical activity
  • Improper warming up and cooling down at sport
  • Poor flexibility
  • Repetitive movements
