Postural Pain at Vertex Osteopathy

As much as we want to believe the perfect posture exists, it doesn’t! With that in mind staying in one position, no matter how straight and upright, can lead to postural pains. That’s why it’s always good to keep moving around, especially when working at a desk.

If however nothing seems to alleviate the pain, Osteopathy can be used to help. Most postural pain involves a heaviness across the tops of the shoulders or a dull ache across the lower back. Osteopaths can use techniques to lift this weight off and get you feeling taller and lighter.

What are postural pains?

Postural pains are any pains arising after staying in one position for a long period of time. As they progress this length of time may become shorter and shorter but usually the pains arise after at least 1 hour of being stationary.

Many patients describe these pains as a weight across the shoulders, a stiff neck or a constant dull achey pain. They also tend to occur at work or towards the end of the day following work.

Some common causes of Postural Pain

Postural pains occur from staying in one posture for a long period of time, this means the causes are to do with lifestyle as apposed to anything traumatic.

  • Working at the wrong desk for you
  • Working longer hours than usual
  • Stress
  • Overwork
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Upper Cross Syndrome
  • Spending the evening on your phone
  • Any hobbies that involve hunching over a desk

We don’t want to stop you from doing things you enjoy and we all have to work, so instead of stopping the causes it’s more about little tweaks to your posture to take the pressure off the back.
